- Select the materials and hand tools for the technique to be used
- Identify, fit and use personal protective equipment according to health and safety in the workplace procedures
- Check tools and equipment are in good order and repair or replace according to workplace procedures
- Identify common steel types for making shoes
- Identify dimensions used in standard shoes for healthy equines
- Determine specific shoe requirements
- Determine the most suitable shoe, its dimensions and the appropriate steel for a particular equine and its work
- Measure equine fore and hind feet, using safe handling techniques, and make allowance for a range of variants
- Determine and record specifications for the required shoes according to equine requirements
- Make sets of standard shoes
- Determine and cut the steel length required from measurements and specifications
- Heat steel in the forge to a malleable working temperature
- Maintain the forge fire at working temperature and monitor potential hazards and risks
- Perform standard steps in making shoes, including the marking, fitment, shaping and finishing of the shoe according to equine requirements
- Use correct posture and balance when using tools to perform activities
- Perform final fitting, check fit against quality standards and make any required alterations to obtain optimum final fit
